How do I apply for a driver's license?

To apply for a learner's permit or driver's license, you will need to visit a Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles office to complete an application and request testing. Learner's permit written exams are given on a walk-in basis at full-service DMV offices. License exams include written and road tests and are only given by appointment.

Can I renew or replace a license over the Internet?

You cannot yet renew or replace a driver's license over the Internet. You will need to visit a DMV office to renew or replace your license. Virtually all Connecticut DMV offices, including satellite, mobile and AAA offices, can process standard license renewals and replacements.

How do I get a state ID card?

DMV ID cards are available to any Connecticut resident who does not hold a driver's license or whose license has been suspended or revoked. I am serving out of state in the U.S. military. Do I have to renew my license?

I am over 18 and applying for my first license. Do I need to get a learner's permit?

Why must I provide my Social Security number to get a license or ID?

Federal law requires anyone applying for a state license or ID card to provide a Social Security number. If you are ineligible for Social Security, you need a certified letter from the Social Security Administration explaining why.

How do I change my address or name on my license?

Changing most information on your driver's license is relatively easy and can be done by mail or phone, as well as in person at any Connecticut DMV office. However, changing your name must be done in person and you need to bring supporting documentation to prove the name change.

Can I get a temporary disabled plate or placard?

Yes. Temporary placards can be given to any resident certified by a doctor as having a temporary condition that meets state guidelines for disabled drivers. These placards are valid for up to six months.
