Replacing a Lost License

Replacing a lost, stolen, or destroyed Florida driver license is fairly simple. If it was stolen, you should immediately file a report with your local police department. You may be eligible to receive a duplicate free of charge if you bring in a copy of the police report when you apply for a replacement.

Obtain a duplicate license by doing the following:

• Apply online if your citizenship has already been established on your driving record. A nominal service fee, payable by any major credit card, will be charged in addition to the $10 replacement fee.

• Go into your local driver license office and apply in person. You'll need to show two acceptable forms of ID.

Proof of Identity

In certain cases you might be required to establish your identity or residence again, as well as show proof of your date of birth, so always be prepared with the appropriate identification documents just in case.

Non-Citizen Applications

If you're not a citizen of the U.S., you must apply for a duplicate in person at your local driver license office. Bring two appropriate forms of identification.

Out-of-State Duplicate Applications

If you're temporarily out of the state, you can still apply for a duplicate license to replace yours if it's lost, stolen, or destroyed. You'll receive a 90-day permit free of charge.

For all out-of-state applications, please provide your complete name, Social Security number, Florida driver's license number, and temporary out-of-state address. The 90-day permit is designed to cover you until you return to the state; you must be back in Florida to receive a duplicate license.

Out-of-Country Duplicate Applications

If you are temporarily out of the country or live abroad, you can still apply for a duplicate license, though process times will be longer. Below are various methods to obtain a duplicate license:

• Apply online if your citizenship has been established on your driving record. Note that for out-of-country applications, a digital photo must be on file to obtain a duplicate license online.

• Call (850) 617-2000 to apply. DHSMV Customer Service will send a duplicate request package to your foreign address. Upon return of the package, DHSMV will send you a new license.

• Fill out an e-mail request.

For those who need an emergency duplicate license, DHSMV Customer Service will refer you to a courier service for expedited service.

Military Applications

If you're in the military and stationed outside of Florida, you can apply for a duplicate license by e-mail, through the online system, or by mail (at the address listed above).
