Top How to Apply for a Learner's Permit

You must be at least 15 years old to apply for a Learner's Permit in Georgia. You'll need to visit your local Customer Service Center with your parent or guardian, and take a written test and a vision exam.

    Documents you'll need include:

    • Certified birth certificate
    • Social Security card
    • Certificate of School Attendance, completed within the past 30 days
    • $10 license fee

If you are under the age of 18 and not enrolled in school, you'll also need to provide a copy of your GED, or an attendance form from your county's Board of Education stating you are enrolled in an approved home school. If you withdraw from school before you graduate, have more than 10 unexcused absences, or reports of misconduct, you cannot apply for a learner's permit or keep one if you already have it.

Drive responsibly. If you get a traffic citation while driving with a learner's permit, it could be suspended.

You must hold your learner's permit for one year and one day before applying for a Class C (regular) driver's license.

You can drive with your permit for up to 24 months, or until you earn your regular driver's license―whichever comes first.

    Top Georgia's Joshua's Law

Begun on January 1, 2007, all teen drivers will be required to complete an approved driving education course before applying for your regular Class D driver license. For more information on this new regulation, see the brochure or pamphlet published by the Department of Driver Services.

Top If You Lose Your Permit

If you lose your permit, or if it's stolen, you can apply for a replacement at your local Customer Service Center. You'll need to furnish proper documentation, and your parent or guardian will need to show a Georgia driver's license or photo ID.

Obtain a police report if your permit has been stolen. You may need to furnish this to the driver's license office, if requested.

    Top Practice Tests

The Unofficial DMV Guide provides practice tests online to help you study for your written exam. Study the Georgia Driver's Manual thoroughly before taking the test. This book provides all the laws and rules of the road, as well as details about the numerous road signs you'll encounter.
