Purchasing a vehicle can be a very exciting event, but you must keep your ducks in a row to make the process a smooth one. First, it is the responsibility of the seller to complete and sign a bill of sale, Form ITD-3738, naming you as the new owner of the vehicle. This is imperative in proving that you are now the proud owner of the vehicle, free and clear.

Top Bill of Sale Specifics

You will become quite familiar with this document if you are attempting to title your vehicle, unless the sales price has been entered in the specified area of the existing title, in which case a bill of sale is not required. If the existing title has an area where the seller can declare the amount you paid for the vehicle (as most blue Idaho titles do), you will not need to fill out a separate bill of sale.

Otherwise, be sure this document lists a vehicle description (year, make, vehicle identification number), selling price, buyer's name, seller's signature and address, and the date. And if you hope to avoid a $20 late-filing penalty, take care of this detail within 30 days of purchasing the vehicle.
