Registration
To drive your ATV on the highway or public roads, you must register it with your County Assessor and purchase a license plate.
If you're going to drive it on private land or official off-road areas, get an off-road sticker through the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) or through the County Assessor's Office.
Check out this IDPR document for office locations, what stickers you need and where, and helmet requirements. The IDPR also has a review of what constitutes an ATV.
Farmers who only operate their ATVs on their own property don't have to register it, but they are encouraged to do so.
NOTE: As of January 1, 2009 a restricted use license plate will be available for all off-highway vehicles (OHV). The plate, along with an OHV registration sticker, will allow all OHVs to operate on Forest Service roads, unless otherwise posted. The license plate and registration sticker can ONLY be obtained at County Assessor Motor Vehicle offices during 2009.
Titling
Everyone must title an all-terrain vehicle (ATV); this protects you if it's stolen. Title your ATV at your County Assessor's Motor Vehicle Office. When you purchase an ATV from a dealer, they may take care of the registration and titling for you.
Registration & Title Fees
To make your ATV street legal, the registration fee is $19.25 in Ada County, and $15.25 in all other Idaho counties.
A yearly off-road sticker from the IDPR costs $10; the County Assessor also sells these. Certain IDPR areas require you to have a license plate and a sticker; check with the IDPR for these locations.
Whether you drive your ATV off-road or not, the title fee is $8, plus sales tax (6% of the purchase price).
Top Registering and Titling Snowmobiles
Idaho groups snowmobiles into the same category as ATVs. Refer to the information above and contact the IDPR or your County Assessor when you're ready to register and title your snowmobile.
Top Registering and Titling Recreational Vehicle Trailers
Register your recreational vehicle trailer at your County Assessor's Motor Vehicle Office. The registration fee is $9, plus sales tax of 6% of the purchase price.
You must purchase a recreational vehicle sticker. For trailers, the first-time issuance fees are prorated quarterly, and are as follows:
- $8.50 for the first $1,000 of the trailer's market value.
- $5 extra for each remaining $1,000 portion.
You will not, however, have to title your trailer.
Top Registering and Titling Aircraft
The process to register and title your aircraft depends on what it is. Contact the Idaho Division of Aeronautics for instructions.
