Receiving a traffic ticket can start an unpleasant chain reaction.

For starters, a notice of your infraction will be sent to the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), where it will be added to your driving record. Every violation carries a point value, and these points will stay on your license for two years. We've included a list of violations and their corresponding points at the bottom of this section.

If you receive too many points within a short period of time, you'll face additional ramifications, including the possibility of having to complete a
defensive driving program or face a license suspension.

But, that's not all. Your insurance rates may go up. Sometimes, even a minor, two-point violation can be enough to boost your insurance premium into a higher category. Several minor violations in a short period of time can have as significant impact on your premium as one major infraction.

And, it can get worse. Your carrier may decide to cancel or not renew your policy. You'll then have to shop for a new carrier, possibly with a "high risk" customer label. This could limit your choices in companies, and will definitely increase your premiums.

If you've recently received a ticket, or have a lot of points on your license, and are concerned about the impact it may have on your rates, it's best to contact your insurance agent, or call your insurance company directly.

Remember, everyone who drives in Indiana needs to be able to show proof of financial responsibility. Please see our Requirements and Information section.

Lastly, you'll have to pay a fine for your violation. Of course, you always have the option of contesting your ticket in court. For details on doing both, see our Paying Your Traffic Ticket section.

So, what's the good news in all of this? Hopefully, receiving that ticket will make you a better, safer driver for years to come.
