Top Application Process

If you're at least 14, you can hop on the road to obtaining your Kansas driver's license. For most, this means starting with your instruction permit.

Incidentally, if you've just moved to Kansas and hold an instruction permit from your former state, you'll need to apply for a Kansas permit.

To begin the process, go to a license exam station. If you're under 16, your parent or guardian must give their permission for you to apply and must accompany you.

Be sure to bring proper proof of age, identity, residency, and address.

You'll be asked to take both a vision and a written test. After passing the tests and paying the $8 fee, you'll be the proud owner of a Kansas instruction permit. Congratulations!

Top Vision Test

It's imperative to have adequate visual acuity and range of vision in order to safely operate a vehicle. That's why you'll need to pass the vision test. If you fail, a licensed ophthalmologist or optometrist needs to complete a vision report indicating you see well enough to drive safely before you can take the written exam.

You might be granted permission to drive with restrictions, such as while wearing corrective lenses, or only during daylight hours.

The test is free, and you don't need an appointment.

Top Written Test

On this test, you'll be grilled on Kansas traffic laws, as well as the shape, color, and meaning of various road signs. Prepare yourself by thoroughly studying the Kansas Driving Handbook.

Testing is free, and you don't need an appointment. But if you fail the test, you'll have to wait at least until the next day to take it again. You can try up to four times to pass the test. After that, you'll have to wait six months before trying again.

Top Lost or Expired Permits

Permits are valid for one year. They may be renewed at a exam station.

If you misplace your permit, go to an exam station for a duplicate.

Bring some sort of identification, such as your birth certificate. If you're under 16, bring your parent or legal guardian.

Top Permit Privileges

With the permit, you can drive at any time, providing there's a licensed driver who is 18 or over, with at least one year of driving experience, sitting in the passenger seat. Also be aware that:

• Hours driven with a supervisor who is under 21 don't count toward the minimum required 50 hours of driving time you must accumulate before applying for your restricted license.

• You must hold your permit for at least six months before trying for your restricted license.
