How exciting! You're getting your driver's license. You've probably been waiting, planning and dreaming about this for years.

There are different types of licenses, and your age determines which type license you can get in Kansas. Learner's permits can be obtained at age 14, restricted licenses at 15, and regular licenses at 16. If you're younger than 21, your license will be good for four years before it must be renewed. A learner's permit will cost $8 and your driver's license will be $9.

Here are the requirements for the various permits:

    Top Instruction Permit

    • You must be 14 years of age. A parent's or guardian's consent is required for all applicants younger than 16.
    • Vision and written tests are required.
    • Instruction permit holder may drive at any time when accompanied by a licensed adult driver 18 years of age or older.
    • To get a restricted license, you must have held an instruction permit for at least six months.

    Top Restricted Driver's License

    • You must be 15 years of age but younger than 16.
    • A parent's or guardian's consent is required.
    • You'll need to have had an instruction permit for at least six months, during which time you must have completed at least 25 hours of supervised driving. An additional 25 hours is required before you turn 16. All 50 hours can be completed any time after obtaining your instruction permit.
    • Before you turn 16, you must provide an affidavit showing at least 50 hours of adult- supervised driving, with 10 of those hours being at night, supervised by a licensed driver at least 21 years old. If the affidavit is not provided before you turn 16, you'll remain restricted until you're 17 or until the affidavit is provided, whichever occurs first.
    • You can drive to and from school (not school activities); to and from or in connection with any employment- or farm-related work; or at any time when accompanied by a licensed adult driver 18 years of age or older.

Top Non-restricted Driver's License (For 16 and 17 Year Olds)

    • You'll need to take the full test (vision, written, and driving) or have a driver's education completion slip.
    • You must provide an affidavit showing at least 50 hours of adult-supervised driving, with 10 of those hours being at night, by a licensed driver at least 21 years old.

Good luck with your driving tests! Remember to always drive safely. If you'd like more information, the Kansas Department of Transportation offers a teen driving brochure with statistics, a driving log and information on age requirements.
