Top What are the new laws for new drivers that I keep hearing about?

The new laws cover information such as when drivers under age 21 can and cannot drive, who must accompany them, the Graduated License education course, point accumulations, traffic infractions, and zero alcohol tolerance.

Top Why does my child's ID card not include his address?

This is in order to protect your child in case the card becomes lost. The Child ID Card Program works alongside the Kentucky State Police Missing Persons and Amber Alert programs. The address will be stored in the Kentucky Driver License Information System (KDLIS) in the event of an emergency.

Top What is the child restraint law?

The child restraint law is a primary law that orders all children who aren't at least 40 inches tall to ride in a safety seat or other federally approved restraint system suitable to their age and weight. Failure to comply with this law can cost you $50 in fines, plus an additional $10 donation to the Traumatic Brain Injury Trust Fund.

Top Do adults have any seatbelt laws?

Yes. And if you're caught without your seatbelt on, it's considered a second offense and you're at risk for being fined.

Top What is the "One Stop Shop"?

The Division of Driver Licensing (DDL) provides the One Stop Shop as a place for people to take care of needs such as traffic school, driving records, reinstatement fees, etc.

Top Who is not allowed to have a license?

People under the age of 16, and anyone who has been deemed mentally incompetent by the court, has a physical or mental impairment that makes it unsafe to drive, has had a license suspended or revoked and not reinstated, and anyone who doesn't understand the English language well enough to understand road signs.

Top I'm moving to Kentucky next week and my 15-year-old son has his learner's permit. Will he be able to transfer it to Kentucky?

Go to your local Circuit Court Clerk's office to complete and turn in the Voluntarily Surrendered License Affidavit. Leave it, and your license, with the clerk.
