In order to obtain your motorcycle endorsement, you must complete vision, written knowledge, and on-cycle skills exams. You can prepare for these exams by using the Louisiana Motorcycle Guide. This handbook will also let you take a practice written exam.

For the on-cycle skills exam, you'll need to provide your own motorcycle with current proof of insurance, a current inspection sticker, and current license plates. You must also wear a motorcycle helmet.

When you head out to your nearest Office of Motor Vehicles location, be sure to take your current driver's license.

The motorcycle endorsement fee is $19, though it may vary.

You can avoid taking the on-cycle skills exam if you successfully complete a motorcycle safety course. You must present a certificate of successful completion when you apply for your motorcycle endorsement.

Louisiana suggests two motorcycle safety courses:

• Harley-Davidson Rider's Edge New Rider Course

• School and Community Support Motorcycle Training Course

• You must wear a helmet when operating a motorcycle.

• You must wear eye protection, unless your motorcycle has a windshield.

• Your motorcycle must be inspected every year.

• You must have proof of liability insurance or financial security at all times.

• You must carry your license with your motorcycle endorsement at all times.
