Top1) Determine the Status of Your Registration

    Renew MN Registration

To maintain good standing with the law, you must annually renew your vehicle's registration and maintain car insurance. You can look for an insurance carrier or shop for lower rates at our Insurance Center.

For more information on the renewal process, scroll down to the section titled "Check Your Renewal Notice."

Register a Vehicle in MN for the First Time

If you just purchased a vehicle or recently moved to the state, you will need to register your vehicle with Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS). For more information on this topic, visit our car registration page.

    Register a Non-Operational Vehicle

    1. Know the vehicle's plate number.
    2. Have the vehicle's title.
    3. Have proof of ID.
    4. Be prepared to pay with a check or cash.
    5. Visit your local DVS office.

    Top2) Check Your Renewal Notice

The DVS will mail your renewal notice about a month prior to your registration's expiration date. If you don't receive it, call your local DVS office.

    Top3) Calculate Your Fees

Fees vary according to the year and classification of your vehicle. Your local DVS office can quote your rate over the phone, provided you know your license plate number.

Expect to pay a higher rate if your vehicle is young for, just like car insurance rates, registration fees are higher for newer and more valuable vehicles.

    Avoid Late Fees and Penalties

    There are no late fees.

Top4) Renew Online, In Person or By Mail

    Renew Online

    1. Have your vehicle renewal form. You'll need your vehicle's license plate number and the last three digits of your vehicle identification number (both listed on the renewal form) to log in.
    2. Be ready to pay the registration fee, including the $1.75 online transaction fee, using Visa or MasterCard.
    3. Visit the state's online renewal location and follow the instructions.
    4. Allow seven days for processing.

    In Person

    1. Have your driver's license.
    2. Know your license plate number.
    3. Though not mandatory, it won't hurt to have your renewal notice.
    4. Have cash or a check to pay the registration fee (credit cards are only accepted online).
    5. Visit your local DVS office.

    By Mail

    1. Enter any address changes, if applicable, on the provided space located on the back of the renewal form.
    2. Tear off the renewal form section. Mail it along with your registration payment in the provided envelope.
    3. Allow 10 days for processing.

    Top5) Affix Your Stickers

Affix your decals to the rear plate. Included instructions will explain where to place them.

    Top6) Get a Tax Deduction

Only a small portion of your vehicle license fee is deductible as personal property tax. To determine the amount, subtract $35 from each car's vehicle tax. If you don't know your car's vehicle tax, you can learn by visiting the DVS Tax Info page and entering your driver's license number.

If you require more information, the DVS recommends contacting your accountant or a tax attorney.

Top7) Do Your Part to Keep Our Roadways Safe

To enhance your vehicle's dependability and your safety, make preventive maintenance a priority. Simple procedures like changing the oil, rotating and replacing the tires, and regular tune-ups will aid your vehicle's reliability and longevity.

You should also consider purchasing an after-market auto warranty, enrolling in a roadside assistance program, and finding a mechanic who has your best interests in mind.
