Before you can apply for a driver's license in Mississippi, you must first get a learner's permit from the Department of Public Safety's Highway Patrol.

    Top Learner's Permit

The learner's permit in Mississippi is classified as an LP license. You can apply for an LP license as early as age 15.

To apply, visit your local driver's license office to take a written test and vision screening. Both your parents will need to sign the application form, unless your parents are divorced. Then, only the custodial parent will need to sign.

You'll also need to provide your Social Security card, a certified copy of your birth certificate, and a certified school attendance form (if you're under 18). This form verifies your enrollment and participation in school and is only valid for 30 days. Pick one up at your school office.

The fee for an LP license is $4, payable only in cash.

Looking for a specialized practice test? We also have Motorcycle and Commercial (CDL) Practice Tests as well.

    Top Intermediate License

The next step up after your learner's permit is the intermediate license, classified as a "Y" license. To earn this class of license, you must pass the driving test, as well as the written exam and vision screening.

You can apply for this license after you've held the learner's permit for six months, and you must provide the same documentation: your Social Security card, a certified copy of your birth certificate, and a certified form from your school verifying your attendance.

With an intermediate license, you can drive unsupervised from 6 a.m.-10 p.m. At all other times, a parent, guardian, or other licensed driver at least 21 years old must accompany you as you drive, and that person must sit in the passenger seat beside you at all times.

An intermediate license costs $6, payable only in cash.

    Top Practice Tests

The Unofficial DMV Guide wants to help you get started driving. Study your driver's manual, and then take a few online practice tests to prepare you for the written exam.

    Top Under 18

There are no driving restrictions once you apply for your regular Class R license, but if you are under 18 years old, you are still required to show proof of school attendance unless you are married. Then you'll need to show your marriage certificate.

This license is valid for one year or until your birthday, whichever comes first.

The cost for an Under 18 Regular Class R license is $6.

    Top Lost Permits

You can apply for a replacement license at your local driver's license office. Your first replacement is $6, but if you have to request a replacement more than once, the next one will cost you $11.

    Top Expired Permits

If you need to renew your permit before moving on to the next level of license, you'll pay the same amount as the original fee. If you wait to renew your permit until after it has expired, you'll need to pay an additional $1 late fee. Visit your local driver's license office to renew.
