Find an approved New York Classroom Course:
There are numerous types of traffic schools within the state of New York, and most of them offer quality training for drivers in general.
But if you need or want to take a driving course for a specific reason, check the state-approved list of agencies. These sponsors are the only ones approved by the state to reduce points on your driving record or help reduce your insurance premiums.
Top Point Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP)
The state's new PIRP program specifically addresses reducing points and insurance premiums. You have the option of completing this course from a state-approved sponsor or corporation in one of two ways: traditional classroom or an Alternative Delivery Method (ADM), such as the Internet. PIRP class listings can be found on the DMV's Web page.
Point Reduction
Within 10 weeks of successfully completing the course, your sponsor will notify the DMV. Up to four points will then be trimmed from your active driving record. For confirmation, you'll need to request an updated driving record from the DMV.
Insurance Premium Reduction
Your sponsor should mail you certification within 45 days of completing the course. Submitting this to your provider will reward you with a 10% reduction in your insurance premiums for the next three years. Keep in mind, however, that this certificate won't protect you from general premium increases or increases resulting from accidents or violations.
Top Other Reasons to Attend Traffic School
Improving your driving is the main benefit of traffic school, but there are many other reasons for taking a class or two. The choice to attend traffic school may be yours to make, or the choice may be made for you.
DWI
You may be ordered to take a driving course because of a traffic violation, like driving while intoxicated. The state does not allow suspensions or revocations to be prevented by taking a course, but it may be part of your sentencing.
Benefits for Seniors
Drivers 50 years old and older may want to take a refresher driving course. Sometimes these courses will also reduce your insurance premiums; check with your own insurance company to learn its policies.
The AARP also offers monthly refresher courses in many cities and towns for around $10, so check its Web site for a schedule and location near you.
Benefits for Teen Drivers
If you are a teen driver, or approaching driving age, check out The Unofficial DMV Guide's special section just for teen drivers.
Top A Note About Traffic Tickets
Individual courts within the state decide if traffic tickets may be dismissed with the successful completion of a driver improvement program, based on your driving record and the current violation.
Most of the time, the ticket will not be dismissed, but again, it is up to the individual court to decide.
Top Driver Responsibility Assessments
New York State has begun assessing a fine, payable over three years, for certain traffic violations or accumulation of points on your driving record. The fee for the Driver Responsibility Program is not reduced by taking a defensive-driving course or attending a traffic school, regardless of the circumstances.
These assessments apply to any driver, resident or non-resident, for traffic violations committed within the state.
