But, here are the answers to some common questions:
Is there someplace that I may view all the types of special plates that are available?
Yep. Check out the Bureau of Motor Vehicles' (BMV) Types of Special License Plates chart.
How can I find out more specific information about these plates, like how much they cost and who can order them?
It's simple. After going to the above page, just click on the link for whatever plate you'd like to have more information about. You'll then be greeted with another page that should cover everything you need to know about the plate.
So, for instance, if you're interested in finding out more about a Cleveland Indians plate, just click on the link and the information will appear.
How much do license plates cost?
That's a good question, but there isn't a single answer. The BMV does provide a list of its license plate fee structure to tackle this issue.
How do I obtain new plates?
You have four choices: in person, by mail, by phone, or online. Again, see our License Plate and Placards section for complete ordering details.
How do I order replacement plates?
If your license plate has been lost, stolen, or damaged you can replace it in person, by mail, or online. We discuss this issue in our Replacing a Lost Registration section.
What's the difference between a personalized plate and an initial reserve plate?
A personalized plate must contain at least four letters, while an initial reserve plate does not. The BMV provides more information about special license plates and the finer points of this issue.
Where does the extra money for specialized plates go?
For personalized and initial reserve plates, the money is applied to highway operations. For organizational plates, the money goes to the organization. For collegiate plates, the money is used for scholarships at the school in question.
Our organization routinely transports individuals with disabilities. Where can I find out more information about obtaining or keeping disability plates for our company?
The BMV covers information on disability parking placards for both private and public organizations.
Does the BMV issue antique plates?
Yes. For more information about the plates and the application process, visit our License Plates & Placards section.
If I move out of state, do I need to surrender my license plates?
Nope. Recycle them as you see fit.
