Renew OK Registration
To drive legally, you must renew your vehicle's registration annually and maintain uninterrupted car insurance coverage. If you're in the hunt for a new carrier, visit our Insurance Center for quotes from different companies.
Start with "Check Your Renewal Notice" below to learn how to renew your registration.
Register a Vehicle in OK for the First Time
You must register your car for the first time with the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) if you recently moved to the state or just purchased a new vehicle. You can find the whole scoop on what to do and where to go on our car registration page.
Register a Non-Operational Vehicle
If you take your vehicle off the road and cancel the insurance, you must first return the tags. Otherwise, you'll receive a letter from the OTC demanding explanation. Failure to answer the letter will result in a suspended license.
When it comes time to return your non-operational vehicle to the road, you must:
- Have the vehicle's title.
- Locate the vehicle's last registration certificate.
- Be ready to pay the registration fees.
- Visit your local tag agency.
Top2) Check Your Renewal Notice
You'll receive a renewal notice in the mail to you prior to your vehicle registration's expiration date. This serves only as a reminder. You do not need the notice to renew. If you don't receive one, contact your local tag agency. Keep in mind that the failure to receive a notice does not free you from the obligation to renew on time.
The state doesn't require emissions inspections―period―so don't expect information about a scheduled inspection on your notice. You can learn more about the state's stance on this matter at Smog & Emission Checks.
Top3) Calculate Your Fees
You can find your registration fee on the renewal notice. The OTC determines fees by the number of years a vehicle is registered. So just like insurance rates, you can expect to pay less as your vehicles ages.
Avoid Late Fees and Penalties
You have a 30-day window beyond your registration's expiration date to renew. After that, you must pay an extra 25 cents per day.
Top4) Renew Online, In Person or By Mail

Top5) Affix Your Stickers
Upon receiving it, affix your new tag (month decal) to the rear license plate's upper left corner.
Top6) Get a Tax Deduction
The OTC recommends contacting an accountant or a tax attorney for clarity on this topic.
Top7) Do Your Part to Keep Our Roadways Safe
Vehicle maintenance should be a priority rather than a reaction to an engine breakdown. Proper maintenance will not only keep you road-safe, but save you money. Some good maintenance practices include changing the oil, regular tune ups, and rotating the tires or replacing them when necessary.
You can also protect yourself and your wallet when you subscribe with a roadside assistance program, buy an after-market auto warranty, and find a mechanic you can trust.
