    Top Quicker Service?

While one should never expect to get in and out of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) too quickly, the Oregon DMV offers the following tips on getting faster service:

Using Online and Traditional Mail Services

Vehicle registrations, address changes, and other matters may be done entirely online in some circumstances. Forms, manuals, and more are also available online.

    When Visiting a DMV Location

The Oregon DMV advises that before noon, during the middle of the week, and during the middle of the month are the best times for DMV business. The worst times, and longest waits, are during lunch time, Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and the days before and after holidays.

    When Calling the DMV

Have your driver license number, license plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN) or other appropriate information ready to give to a customer service representative when you call. Also have pen and paper ready to write down requirements and other information you gather.

    Top Oregon Residency Required

To register a vehicle, or qualify for an Oregon driver license or identification card, individuals must be residents of the state and be able to prove it.

    Top Identity Theft

The Oregon DMV also advises that if you are a victim of identity fraud or theft, you should contact local law enforcement to file a report, contact your bank and creditors to notify them, and contact the Federal Trade Commission to report the situation, either online or at (877) 438-4338.

The Oregon DMV may issue new driver license or identification card numbers to customers if their names and numbers have been used fraudulently. To obtain a new number in the case of fraud, you must provide evidence of fraudulent use of the license or ID number, including at least one of the following types of documents:

    • Police report or letter on police letterhead
    • Report or letter from a credit card company, credit reporting bureau, or bank
    • Court-issued document
    • Letter from a District Attorney

Victims of fraud may also provide a signed statement explaining the fraudulent activity and why a new number should be issued. Include your contact information and your daytime phone number, fill out a Driver License/ID Card Application (form 735-173), and mail to:

    • Oregon DMV
    • Manager, Driver Issuance Unit
    • 1905 Lana Ave. NE
    • Salem, OR 97314

The Oregon DMV will review the documentation submitted and make a determination on whether a new number can be issued. They will inform you by mail.
