Rhode Island's driving records are housed with the Operator Control Division, a small part of the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Unlike some states that chronicle a lifelong record of a driver's history, Rhode Island only keeps records for the past three years. Records include information on traffic accidents, moving violations, suspensions, restrictions, and Commerical Driver's License (CDL) specifications.

Under the Federal Driver's Privacy Act of 1994, Rhode Island prohibits the distribution of personal information such as your address or Social Security number.

Since your driving record can be reviewed by insurance companies or potential employers, it's important to make sure the information is accurate.

The Internet provides the fastest approach for residents who wish to request a driving record. To access your files, you must log on to the Rhode Island driving record retrieval page and enter the following information: last name, date of birth, zip code, and your driver's license number. Once completed, you'll be asked for credit card information (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover) to cover an $19.50 retrieval fee.

Top Request a Record by Mail or in Person

For a more traditional approach, you can request your record through mail or by visiting the office. In either scenario you must be sure to provide your name, date of birth, address, license number and pay a $16 fee. It will take about 10 days to process your request by mail. If you visit in person you can return to collect your driving record after three days. Mail or visit:
